[android-developers] Link between NetworkInterface and NetworkInfo

Is there a link between NetworkInterface and NetworkInfo?

NetworkInterface tells the IP address, and NetworkInfo tells me the
type, but how do I make the connection between IP address and type?

Thanks

Neil

Here's my one suggestion. Go try Rails for yourself. If you have
specific questions that you need help with then ask them here.

Asking abstract questions like these on a forum dedicated to Rails is
going to get you nowhere. It's pointless really. All that will ever
happen is exactly what you see here. It starts a firestorm of defensive
responses and un-constructive conversation that just ends up wasting
everyone's time.

Re: 2.1 linker changes

Should appName.nocache.js be one of the Artifacts obtained via
artifacts.find(EmittedArtifact.class)?

In 2.04 it was emitted in the link method but in 2.1 it isn't!!!!

Is this by design? If so, what is the design?!?

[android-developers] Re: One process, two live Application objects?

Well, I've never expected onTerminate to be useful, but subclassing
Application is.

The Application's onCreate() method (and any static and instance
initializers) are called before ANY application component is created
or loaded.

There's no other way to make this guaranty that I am aware of. You can
come close if you put a reference to a singleton in every single
component, and remember to always do so. But that's not a good
approach -- it violates once-and-only-once. And if you're using third-
party code as part of your app, it may not be possible. Although,
admittedly, such code reuse is rare and problematic on Android, so
it's nearly always possible.

But why campaign against Application? It's a perfectly fine singleton
itself, it's just misunderstood. Fix the documentation. Deprecate
onTerminate. Suggest to people that their modularity would benefit if
they group related statics into their own singleton, and their memory
use might even improve if they then reference this singleton only
where it's needed.

On Oct 31, 3:39 pm, Dianne Hackborn <hack...@android.com> wrote:

I don't understand the question, actually. By "person" do you mean the
model? You can do:

echo $this->Form->create('Person', array(...));

[android-developers] Vertex buffer object corruption on MSM720xa

Hi there,

i was refactoring some of my code today and wanted to minimze buffer
object binds. My use case is it to bind a vertex buffer/index buffer
pair once and batch up rendering as much as possible. Each batch is
uploaded to the currently bound vbo.

This works as expected on all tested devices (Nexus One, Droid,
Samsung Galaxy) but fails on the HTC Hero with stock Android 1.5. I
haven't updated the Hero to test exactly that kind of problems.

I have compiled a small in depth description with a reproduceable test
example. Both can be found at:

http://www.badlogicgames.com/wiki/index.php/Severe_Bug_Updating_Already_Bound_Buffer_Object#Sample_Code

I consulted with a couple of people whom i consider OpenGL experts and
they all agreed that the way i handle the vbo/ibo is indeed correct
and standard compliant.

It would help if some people with an update Hero could try it out and
see whether the problem persists.

Should i file a bug on the Android bug tracker?

Don't redirect as that creates an entirely new request. You could use
setAction() instead.

But I think you need to ask yourself whether this is really the best
way to do this. findPerson() doesn't seem to do a lot of finding at
all. So why bother? Couldn't you simply go directly to person()?

[Rails] Re: Loading xml document using Nokogiri and retrieving CDATA element SOLVED

SOLVED: Guess posting this got me more curious and I figured it out:

If I ask for
my_file.xpath("//EMBEDDED_FILE/DOCUMENT").text

Nokogiri automatically takes the content within the cdata element within the DOCUMENT node and returns it to me without the cdata. Nice. So just a case of making things harder for myself.

On Sun, Oct 31, 2010 at 4:59 PM, David Kahn <dk@structuralartistry.com> wrote:
This is an extension of my last post (problems with REXML) which has me looking to Nokogiri again. The reason I am not using Nokogiri is I can not seem to find a way to get CDATA out of a Nokogiri document.

First, can you tell me if I am loading my document correctly, because when I call my_document.to_xml, I only get one line back:

(rdb:1) test_file = Nokogiri::XML(mismo_xml_file)
#<Nokogiri::XML::Document:0x5dd22 name="document">
(rdb:1) test_file.to_xml
"<?xml version=\"1.0\"?>\n"

So maybe this is the first step and if I get the full doc to load, my cdata will be there?!!

Alternatively, if you have a code snippet of loading a doc and successfully getting CDATA out, that would be a great help!

Thanks in advance,

David

need help with form

Here is my view:

<?php
echo $form->create('Result', array('action' => 'findperson'));
echo $form->input('lname');
echo $form->input('fname');

echo $form->submit();
echo $form->end();
?>

Here is the action:

function findperson()
{
if (!empty($this->data)) {
$this->redirect(array('action' => 'person'));
}
}
//I want to append this to the redirect - $this->data['Result']
['lname']

I am kind of stuck at the moment and not sure what I am doing
wrong....

Right now when i click submit i just get a blank white screen. I would
like the form to take the values of fname and lname and append them to
my url.....

for example...

results/person/lname/fname

Any code/help would be appreciated....

personally, I prefer the syntax of the first method; it seems more "Ruby".

[Rails] Newbie - Rails 3 authentication question (Devise)

Hello!

I'm working on my first Rails app and I have a question regarding
authentication. I already have authentication for signing up, logging
in, logging out, etc. What I need is an account email activation
function and a reset password (forgot password) function. I have read
a little bit about Devise and watched the Railscast episodes on it, it
seems nice, but is it possible to add just the functions I mentioned?
And do I need to change a lot in my current models to do it? Or is it
easier to do it manually?

Any tips or recourses and links on how to do it with Devise or
manually would be appreciated!

Thanks
// Anders

[Rails] Re: JRuby...do i need it?

yes, I am using it exclusively. performance gain it said there is, but
I guess this depends on your application and you have to measure it.

if you need to you can mix java.

you can run it in servlet engine and get a real multi threaded
environment.

but mainly I use it in conjunction with GWT and using maven as build
tool, so everything seams to be glued together by java. kind of funny:
the backend actually is ruby, the frontend is javascript but for build
and development I use java.

worth it, for me definitely. maybe you find some reasons for you as
well, just give it a trial.

[Rails] JRuby...do i need it?

Been a Ruby/Rails developer for about 2 years now. I've had some
experience developing Java apps a few years back. Mostly command line
tools to support scheduled tasks...etc. Nothing major.

I've been somewhat curious about JRuby. Anyone using this platform?
Other than being able to talk to Java via Ruby and vice versa, is
there any performance gains? Is it really worth it?

minimum system requirements

Hi,

I'm developing a project by django 1.2.3. Now it's time to bring the
project to production. I'm looking for dedicated servers but i dont
know the minimum hardware requirements. There are dedicated options
with P4 cpus. Is there any information about requirements?

Thanks all,

Re: GWT2.1 : sample Data bound views

I see, javax.validation would be sweet. So what is the best approach
to plugin the validation into the existing framework?
I saw that there is a 'hasErrors()' and 'getErrors' method in the
driver but how do I create/record an error, how can I trigger the
'editorDelegate.recordError' being called? In the above mentioned
example I can see that there is a 'ZipPlusFourBox extends ValueBox'
which creates a parser, do I have to create a widget subclass for
every single field that needs validation (would be a bit cumbersome,
also in ValueBoxEditor there is a ' TODO i18n' which to me seems not
very production ready)? Any best practices on this would be great.

thanks,
Den

[Rails] Re: Rails vs Grails

I'm on the same situation, I know both Java and Ruby, and I am looking
for a language that I could use both for administration scripting and
web sites,

I tried a little bit both of Grails and Rails

Rails is easer to use, but it looks like LOTS of plugins/gems are no
more compatibles with the lasts versions of Ruby (1.9.2) and Rails
(3.0.1) (ex: the Qt4 binding for ruby), but I hope this will change with
time :)
Another thing that I don't really like about Rails is that I don't feel
like if I had control on the web stack, most of things are "magic" and I
don't always understand what it does on the background...
But rails has a perfect caching system and clustering way (memcached!),
it's also very easy to profile and debug.
And the most important: There is a HUGE community !

Grails also has some advantages, it's template engine if perfect (GSP)
(I like it really more than ERB, tag based templates are more clean),
and it includes ACEGI (the perfect authentication engine ;p) but the
caching system is really really poor (if not inexistent) and it's harder
to cluster (Terracotta), there is almost nobody on the IRC channel
(nobody speaks or ask questions) and the most important thing: GRAILS
LOVES RAM! (~500MB of RES memory for a simple blank web site
deployment..),
another thing non related to grails, for system scripting, the full
interpreter is really slow to start, and grails don't have access to low
level API like symlinks or chmod things)..
About Java itself, it have the advantages to be the language to use to
extends many big softwares like Zimbra or Alfresco

What do you think about that ?
Thank you

[Lovers India] secret of Success

A young man asked Socrates the secret of Success. Socrates told the young

man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met.

Socrates asked the young man to walk with him towards the river.

When the water got up to their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise
and ducked him into the water. The man struggled to get out but Socrates was
strong and kept him there until he started turning blue.

The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get out and the first
thing he did was to gasp and take deep breath. Socrates asked 'What you
wanted the most when you were there?' The man replied 'Air'.

Socrates said 'that's the secret to success. When you want success as
badly as you wanted air, you will get it. There is no other secret'

Never tried it, but first thing I would try is to just make a Bitmap

[android-developers] Extending SimpleCursorAdapter

I'm an Android newbie, stuck on a problem for a over week now, if I
knew what I was doing it would be 10 minutes work.

Im using the NotePad example as a base for an application. This binds
a ListActivity to a Provider.

Its perfect, except it uses SimpleCursorAdaptor, which means the list
only binds to and displays one item per row. I want it to display two
items, both bound the Provider. Or more accurately display the text
from one Content Provider field and an icon which depends on the value
of a different field.

This sounds like a pretty simple thing to do, a very slight
modification to the NotePad application. Trouble is, I have no idea on
*how* to do it. I really need a starting point, and "approach" to use.

So far I have tried (unsuccessfully):

* Hand populating the ListView by reading in the Provider data and
populating an array in OnCreate. This works, except as the data is not
bound the List does not update when I add an item.

* Extending SimpleCursorAdapter with a custom getViewBinder. Could
still only bind to a single column.

* Building my own ListAdaptor. Couldn't get this to work.

* Concatenating both fileds together and "parsing" 2 fields into 1
field read/write.

The next thing I will try is extremely tacky running two separate
simpleCursorAdaptors in two views in a Linear Layout, fudged so the
row height is identical, and duplicate the logic.

I say this only to show that I really, really have tried.

Could someone give me at least a hint as to how I can create a custom
CursorAdaptor which binds to two fields instead of just one like
SimpleCursorAdapter? There must be some easy way ????

Sorry/thanks/help

[android-developers] How can I create an aircraft-mounted-liked compass?

I want to create a non-generic compass that uses rotating directions
instead of a rotating needle as in the conventional compass. The
drawing is like the illustration below.

|
' ' W ' ' ' ' ' N ' ' ' ' ' E ' ' ' ' ' S ' ' '

(shift a bit to the east)

|
' ' ' ' ' N ' ' ' ' ' E ' ' ' ' ' S ' ' ' ' ' W

The needle (depict as "|") is fixed and the direction string should
have
some sort of "rotation" effect that immediately relocates each sign or
character from one tip of the edge to the opposite edge. Of course,
the movement follows the reading of the Android sensor.

Does anyone has an idea how to implement this? I stumbled with how
I create the rotation effect and connect the string's movement with
the sensor reading.

Thanks
/Joe

You might want to read the documentation for BroadcastReceiver,
understand the different between normal and ordered broadcasts, and
find out which one the third party is generating. My guess is that
it's generating an ordered broadcast and sometimes its own receiver is
catching it first and aborting it.

I don't think it's a good idea to re-broadcast normal broadcasts,
because I imagine your receiver and any others could get called more
than once (or even infinitely?!) if you're not careful. And I don't
think it's possible to force yourself to receive an ordered broadcast
if it was aborted upstream.

[Rails] Re: Error messages for nested resource; guide says to use f.error_messages, but is deprecated/didn't

You want to set your comment variable in the controller:

def new
@comment = @post.comments.build
end

so your form is

<%= form_for([@post, @comment]) do |f| %>
<%= render"shared/error_messages", :target => @comment %>
<% end %>

If you build the comment in the form (which you shouldn't be doing
anyways if you're sticking to MVC principles), then when you render the
form, a new comment object is always created. Since it's a new object,
it won't have any errors.

This should answer most, if not all, of your questions about Git:

[android-developers] for loop drawing first graphics to x0 y0 if more than 1 iteration

Anyone have any idea why when i run this for loop to add a graphic to
my screen, the first iteration coordinate get discarded if the loop
runs more than once?

For Example, I have a column of 7 graphics in a graphic array list,
when I remove a graphic the code below runs to insert a new graphic,
and it works perfectly if there is only 1 graphic removed/added. The
problem is when I remove 2 or more graphics from the column, the first
1 that is readded get written to x0 and y0 instead of x64 y64 but the
second graphic is correctly added to x64 y128. I am using OnDraw
canvas to draw.

I am totally stumped with this one, if anyone has any insight on to
why this may be happening please HELP ME?? Thanks a bunch.

if(_theGrid1.size()<7){
int g1left = 7-_theGrid1.size();
int i;
for(i=1;i<=g1left;i++){
x1=64;
y1=i*64;
graphic.getGridCoordinates().setGrid1X(x1);

graphic.getGridCoordinates().setGrid1Y(y1);

_theGrid1.add(0,_toAdd.get(0));
_theGrid1.get(0).setAMT(_theGrid1.get(0).getAMT()
+g1left);
_toMove.add(_toAdd.get(0));

_theGrid1.get(0).setMV(i+10);

_toAdd.remove(_toAdd.get(0));
}

Use Firebug to see if the javascript has even been loaded.

JavascriptHelper has been deprecated in 1.3.x so use
$this->Html->script(array('jquery-1.3.2.min',
'jquery.siteFeature.pack'));

Note that you do not include the .js extension.

Also, if you're loading the JS in your layout, you should include
HtmlHelper in AppController so it's available to all controllers. And
you have Html listed twice above, btw.

oh, damn. I think you just lost me there.

hey, look - I really appreciate the time you've taken to help me on
this and the other one, but I just feel like I'm way over my head.
It's not that you don't explain things well, it's just that my
understanding of how this works is very sketchy, so the chances of me
being able to fix it are remote at best. I feel like I could be
stumbling around on this for weeks, taking up your time with misguided
attempts... so I guess I might leave this problem for someone who
knows what they're doing.

thanks anyway, Rossko - you've been great.

Lucas

current page info

I feel really stupid for asking this, but I'm just noob baker, so...
How do I add a "selected" class to a menu item that points to the
current page and how do I create a title for the current page ?

I created a default layout, and all the pages. Then I created the
routes in 'app/config/routes.php' like "Router::connect('/contact',
array('controller' => 'pages', 'action' => 'display', 'contact'));".
It works just fine, but I have no idea how to add "selected" to the
currently selected menu item and how to create a custom title for the
page.

It would be great if I could just pass the "title" and "selected"
string in this array.
Is it possible ?

You hadn't set the model's id, so a new record is being inserted.

$this->Post->id = $id;
$this->saveField(...);

Another (I think better) way:
$this->Post->updateAll(
array('Post.view' => 'Post.view + 1'),
array('Post.id' => $id)
);

Better still:

$this->Post->increment();

function increment($id = null)
{
if (!$id) $id = $this->id;

$this->updateAll(
array('Post.view' => 'Post.view + 1'),
array('Post.id' => $id)
);
}

Even better again would be to put the updateAll() in afterFind(), so
it's done automatically. But I've yet to figure out a decent way to
differentiate between a find('first') from find('all'), as $results
are unfortunately formatted the same in either case.

[Rails] Will_Paginate — Set the Starting record ? IE, Photo 3, of 8

Hello. I'm working very hard to build projects > photo_albums > Photos
But am Stuck on being able to implement it.

Desired User Flow...

#1 - User clicks their project
#2 - User sees a list of photo albums
#3 - Users clicks a Photo Album
#4 - User see a list of photos in the album
#5 - User views the clicked photo BUT has will_paginate showing in
the nav for all the albums photos and will_paginate is defaulted to
the page number of the photo the user clicked

Controllers Based on the Flow Above:
#2 - PhotoAlbum Index
#4 - PhotoAlbum Show
#5 - Photo Show

Routes:
resources :spaces do
resources :photo_albums
resources :photos
end

Does this sound right? Bec I haven't been able to get this working,
and the code is getting ugly :)

Thanks
