[android-developers] Re: Android preprocessor, //#ifdef...

On some development systems a C preprocessor has been hijacked to
preprocess Java code. It's not standard, though.

You can use final constants in Java to select pieces of code. Eg, "if
(MY_CONSTANT) { ... }" where MY_CONSTANT is a "final" boolean value.
The Java compiler is defined to compile these on or off at compile
time, eliminating any runtime checks. However, the code in a
"deactivated" if leg still needs to be legal Java with variables that
exist, etc.

[android-developers] onCreate, onStop..... super.onCreate, super.onStop... called before code or after?

This might be a simple question but I'm seeing the super call at the
end of the overwritten function and also at the start of the
function. What is recommended? any differences on this?

I feel very beginner with this question... :P

i.e.

@Override
protected void onCreate)
{
super.onCreate();
// some code
}

or

@Override
protected void onCreate()
{
// some code
super.onCreate();
}

Highlight area when click on map ?

Hello.

Right now, I have a general Google map, with icons on some cities /
towns in our country (31 icons in total)

On the left of the screen, I have a list of the towns in descending
order (north to south)...

(I'll give you the URL, however our site isn't public as yet)...

When you put your curser over the list of towns (left of screen), the
background colour changes, (simple javascript / html..) - but the map
isn't changed at all..

MAIN QUERY

:- I've seen some interactive maps, where you click on an area, & the
map background gets highlighted, showing the area / borders the town /
city covers...

i'm wondering - can this be done by using Google api ? Or is this
done by external / other process ?

:- if this can be done by Google maps api, can someone advise a
tutorial on defining borders etc & making an area within the border
highlight.

:- Also, is it possible to have 2 highlights in different colours - eg
central city, & outer city areas - when you click on an icon, or
click the map directly..

Quite easily, actually.

Sure android is really good for fart app, but what else?

Is this is a serious question? Have you browsed through the Android Market (as painful as that is)? There's a lot more out there than "fart apps".

I don't want to troll but I really can't understand why I heard many developers saying "viva android" when google released the first buggy SDK.

Probably simply because it's an alternative to iPhone.

Now, someone with your experience developing for so many devices can surely adapt to not having a preprocessor. It's good for many things but definitely not a necessity and will certainly not cripple you when making an Android App.

If you're personally that attached to having a preprocessor, no one is forcing you to develop on Android.

Good luck.

Yah... I tried it by adding python in the command line. But I couldn't
get the actual result. Could you people can give a gist of what
happens when we type "django-admin.py startproject mysite" i.e., which
program will run when we type that and press return key.

Re: Outputting XML with PHP

Guessing that you are referring to this example
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/articles/phpsqlajax.html

> So I guess that brings to my next questions. Is
> it supposed to output a file onto my computer with the .xml file? Or
> is it supposed to just be in my browser.

You should have created a script like
phpsqlajax_genxml.php

You run that script by accessing it via its URL. That can be done by
pasting the url into a browsers address bar, or a javascript (in say a
map page) can access it by url too.

When the script is run, it generates XML on the fly from database
content. That is invisible to whatever called it, browser or
javascript. They would just get back the XML generated by the script
"looking like" they had just accessed a regular XML file.

Which means you should be able to paste the url of your own script
into your own browser, and see XML output - or an error message.

If you can't sort it out, go back to the example exactly as given, and
see if you can get that working before making your changes. If you're
not sure how the example is supposed to work, its likely your changes
haven't been appropriate.

[android-developers] Record audio problem on the LG Ally

Hi guys

I have a music recognition app (Tunepal) that records 12 seconds of
audio @ 22KHz (in one second chunks). After each second, the audio is
copied from a byte array into a float array and eventually I perform
some DSP on the float array.

My app is available on the Android Marketplace and is selling ok. I
have tested it on lots of different phones, such as the HTC Desire/
Hero/Motorola Droid etc and everything is fine.

One of my users has an Lg Ally (running Android 2.1 I believe) and the
recording is not working. In fact it's crashing the app. I have
developed a test program that just records some audio and I think I
have isolated the problem. The test program records audio of various
durations and sample rates and then plays it back. This is the crucial
bit of code:

protected Void doInBackground(Void... arg0)
{
System.out.println("Recording started");
audioRecord = null;
System.gc();
int totalBytes = bufferSize;
try
{
buffer = new byte[bufferSize];
audioRecord = new
AudioRecord(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC, sampleRate,
AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO,
AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT, totalBytes);
audioRecord.startRecording();

int bufferReadResult = audioRecord.read(buffer, 0,
bufferSize);
if (bufferReadResult ==
AudioRecord.ERROR_INVALID_OPERATION)
{
message = "ERROR_INVALID_OPERATION returned";
error = true;
}
if (bufferReadResult == AudioRecord. ERROR_BAD_VALUE)
{
message = "ERROR_BAD_VALUE returned";
error = true;
}
if (bufferReadResult != bufferSize)
{
message = "Requested " + bufferSize + " bytes but read
" + bufferReadResult + " bytes";
error = true;
}
}
catch (Exception e)
{
message = e.getMessage();
error = true;
}

if (! isCancelled())
{
doneRecording();
}

return null;
}

This code works fine on my HTC Desire, but on the LG Ally, no matter
what the buffer size or sample rate is set to, bufferReadResult always
returns 2048. In other words, the call to:

audioRecord.read(buffer, 0, bufferSize);

Always reads just 1024 samples of audio. Actually I havent tested to
see if the buffer contains anything useful.

I can possibly get around this in my app with a bit of work, but I was
wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if there is
a better way to get around it than reading the audio in 2K chunks.

You can try out the test app for yourself here:

http://tunepal.org/tunepal/android/RecordTest.apk

Rotations will screw it up BTW, so keep your phone orientated in
portrait for the test.

Get request path without having a request object

Hi all,

Is there any way of getting the request.path value without having the
request object that Django pass's around. Is there something similar
to os.environ for the web request where I can get the path?

I'm developing an app that needs to cache data on a page basis but the
data may come from any Python code that is run for the request or it
may come from the template layer via custom template tags. I don't
want to have to pass the request path around in order to eventually
pass it to my caching code for use in the cache key. I just want to be
able to find the request path from my caching code.

Possible?

[android-developers] LVL NOT_MARKET_MANAGED

It seems that this error code is returned if the versions of the app
on the device and at the server differ (amongst other times).

What if the user buys on the market, but doesn't get a chance to
validate before the next version comes out ? With a popular app, this
will probably happen every update to someone.

Perhaps a separate code would be useful for version codes differing,
so the user can be prompted to update ?

GWT needs to work on the source code because it just takes what your

But what is your problem supplying source, too?

In the end you propose to use JavaScript as second source code. This
would doubling code and errors without having any advantage.

Moving Frame(iframe) without reloading iframe content

I have a Frame object which contain an iframe to a site. This is
working fine, but I would like to move the Frame to a different parent
without reloading the content of the iframe.

If i just do a myOtherPanel.add(frameWidget) then the Frame does move,
but the iframe content is reloaded -( Is there any way to move the
Frame without the iframe reloading?

The reason I want to do this, is that the iframe contains a form which
is used to upload a file, and I don't want the upload to stop just
because I move the Frame.

[android-developers] Synchronize animations on multiple view

Is it possible to animate multiple views at the same time i.e. with
each child view doing some increment of tween animation? Basically I
want to apply some transformations to child views but not
sequentially, they should all do the transition frame by frame. Any
suggestions on how to achieve this ?

Thanks,

[android-developers] Library development - Development requirements

Hi,

Can anyone explaing what Table 1 ("Minimum versions of SDK tools and
plaforms on
which you can develop library projects.")'s columns really mean. Table is here:

http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/eclipse-adt.html#libraryProject

I.e.

component: Android 1.5 platform, minimum version: r4 or higher

but

component: Android 2.2 plaftorm, minimum version: r1 (or higer).

Blame my English, but I simply do not get what this minimum version
really refer to. Thanks in advance

I don't know what you mean by 'returns the entire Model'. Model choice
fields use as their display values the __unicode__ value of the items
in the queryset. If that isn't defined, you'll get something like
"Area object". The solution is simply to define a __unicode__ method,
which is good practice anyway.

[android-developers] how to make a external jar for android applications

I have a android project. I want other applications to use my
application. AT the same time I don't want to open my source code. So
shared library doesn't work for me.

I export my project to a jar file including res directory. When I
include my jar file to a project, there is no problem to compile.
However, when I run the application, I always get
"java.lang.verifyError". has any one has done that before?

I notified we have android.jar . So the method should work.

Thank you for the help.

Re: [android-developers] Re: AlertDialog changes sequence of events

I strongly recommend you try to find some sample code at
developer.android.com that does something similar and follow that
example.

In other UI frameworks, there's a convenience function, such as
MsgBox() that accomplishes "blocking" the UI thread. I don't know
exactly how it's done, but I suspect it uses co-routines.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to do co-routines in Java, if that's
even possible.

I suggest two solutions: 1) completion methods, 2) state machine.

First is like this: start with this code sequence:

code section A // work done up to needing user input
block for user input
if (OK) {
code section B // work done for positive user input
}

refactor that (requires moving local variables to fields) to

methodA() {
code section A
}
methodB() {
code section B
}
methodA();
block for user input
if (OK) {
methodB();
}

then refactor that to: call methodB in the positive callback method of
the alert dialog instead of after the dialog.show().

The state machine approach is more general, and handles more complex
situations and is easier to modify than a rat's nest of completion
methods..

[android-developers] Re: Inner ListView not respecting layout gravity or width

Sorry Mark, not sure what you mean.

I was using a nested ListView because for each instanve of the outer
list item there will be one or more instances of the inner.
In the example I am using the outer is Contact, and the inner is
RawContact.

When you say "stitch them together at the adapter level", do you mean
implement my own CursorAdapter that amalgamates 2 or more cursors?
How in my CursorAdapter implementation might I represent one or more
rows of the inner query other than using a ListVIew?

Eg from example given above.

Contact-1, Contact1-Name
RawContact-1-a
RawContact-1-b
Contact-2, Contact1-Name
RawContact-2-z

Re: Protected Page + PopupPanel

Sorry, again, looking at your above example, to make my point
clear, using Firebug I can find (!user.isAuthenticated()) and any
a JS debugger to subvert it. GWT obfuscates JS code, but

Re: Protected Page + PopupPanel

Typically, I like to avoid this problem altogether, and NOT allow the
user to see the GWT page
until they are logged in. The Login page is normal JSP, and I employ a
ServletFilter to check
that if the user tries to load the GWT page and is not logged in, they
get redirected to the Login
JSP. There is a specific reason I do this: People who are not
registered, valid, signed-in users
CAN NOT see the GWT JavaScript code, thus can not figure out how
to ... subvert the generated
JavaScript for evil purposes. I guarantee you that if I can see your
GWT JS, I can figure out how
to hack it to let me do something I shouldn't. Now, we just have to
worry about our real, valid
users, but then, they usually are not trying to hack something to get
IN. If they are, then you
have a problem with your CUSTOMERS, and not everyone of the Net' who
can see the JS.

Actually it doesn't matter whether they have a rooted phone.  This is one of the big reasons for moving to this over forward locking -- forward locking requires trusting the device and its operating system to protect the app.  With the new licensing model, the app does not need to have any trust in the device it is running on or the market client app.  This gets rid of all of the issues that forward locking has with apps not showing up on devices that were not whitelisted/trusted.

Re: How to obtain specified border for a static map request

The available zoom levels only come in integer values ; the zoom is
not infinitely variable to give you a map exactly fitting 'visible',
so what you get is a map at the height/width you specified that
includes at least 'visible'.

If you play with the map pixel size you may get something approaching
more what you want.

[android-developers] Re: Android Market Licensing: Now Available!

Now don't get me wrong, I am sure Google did a better job of it than
ARM did, but I learned to hate licensing servers from the bitter
experience of using ARM's licensing server for their development
tools. We had continual problems with false negatives, i.e, the
program refused to run because it could not get validation from the
license server, but the server was running and the network was
working.

Also, I hesitate to impose a requirement of network connectivity on my
users whenever they want to run my apps. But for apps that have to
presume connectivity anyway, this is a much better solution than copy-
protection.

[android-developers] Extending multiple classes

Hi,
I had a basic question.
Can my class extend 2 or more classes at a time. What is the syntax.
I want to extend Activity as well as Application. Wont this create
problems in the manifest file?
Activity because, I need to do a couple of things during the
onCreate() [binding a service]and Application, because I am creating
objects of another class [service class]which needs to be accessible
throughout my application.

Thanks,
Priyank

Hello, I was going through the tutorial in this link:
http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html#adding-a-link

Wehn I came to section 6.2, I added the link using following code
<%= link_to "My Blog", posts_path %>
and I get this error:
undefined local variable or method `posts_path' for #<ActionView::Base:
0xb5eb0888>

Couldn't figure where I have gone wrong. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Re: adding audio to a game - triggerClip for SFX

triggerClip() was designed to play synchronized sound effects for
musical games like JetBoy.

If you just want to play random sound effects, I would use SoundPool
instead.

Very likely. Has the form been validated?

How to obtain specified border for a static map request

I'm attempting to fetch static maps that have a specified border. I
have attempted to use the visible keyword; however, this gives a
rather wide border around the map that I don't want. AN example URL
for what I am currently trying right now is
http://maps.google.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=37.6,-119.6&visible=32.1,-114.1|43.1,-125.1&size=541x541&format=jpg&maptype=roadmap&sensor=false
THis map should just be california with a little bit of the border
regions, but instead I'm getting a large part of mexico and Oregon,
not to mention large amounts of ocean and states to the East.

Is there a different command to use to specify the border of the map I
am fetching, or perhaps a some number that I can factor my border
numbers so that using the visible keyword provides me with the image
that I want.

Re: Trouble with using a condition on a related model

First, have a look at the output query - if you have the <?php echo
$this->element('sql_dump'); ?> set in your layout, it should be at the
bottom. That should give you some clues as to why it's not working.

But you might want to post your $hasMany association to this group so
we can help better. Are you actually specifying the foreignKey? That
might be the problem.
